Peru among the top ten Arab coffee producers in the world

Peru’s product is enjoyed in the United States, Germany, Belgium, Colombia, Sweden, among other countries.

With a total of 216,000 tons in the 2022 – 2023 campaign, Peru ranks as the ninth largest producer of Arabica coffee worldwide, announced the Commission for the Promotion of Peru for Export and Tourism (PROMPERÚ) on Peruvian Coffee Day, which is celebrated every fourth Friday of August.

This species is considered the best and is the most cultivated in Peru and in the world. It is exported mainly in green or roasted beans, and stands out for its flavor, body and aroma.

Currently, Peru has more than 660 thousand hectares of coffee in which more than 236 thousand producers work, which means that close to one million families live from its cultivation. Its production takes place in 11 regions, but is concentrated in San Martin, Junin, Cajamarca, Amazonas and Cusco.

It is important to mention that Peru is currently the world’s leading exporter and producer of organic coffee together with Ethiopia. Ninety-five percent is cultivated by small farmers and our country has 48.1% of the certified area in Latin America.

Peru is also known for its specialty coffees that are highly valued in the international market for their fragrance, flavor, aroma, body, among other aspects.

Coffee exports in 2022 were USD 1,236 million, showing an increase of 37.8% over the previous year. The main destination markets were the United States, Germany, Belgium, Colombia and Sweden.

PROMPERÚ has been promoting Peruvian coffee in different commercial platforms around the world under the Cafés del Perú brand, which seeks to distinguish this product for its diversity, specialty and origin.

This year, producers and entrepreneurs of the sector participated in the Specialty Coffee Expo in the United States, the World of Coffee in Europe and will be present at the next World Specialty Coffee Conference & Exhibition in Japan, specialized fairs, with excellent business projections.

Likewise, the Peruvian product has been presented in other international events dedicated to food and beverages and has been recognized in prestigious world competitions.

On the other hand, the entity has been working with other state, private and international cooperation organizations such as the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and Swiss Import Promotion Programme (SIPPO) and the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) in the National Plan for Peruvian Coffee 2018-2030 in order to improve the levels of competitiveness and social and environmental sustainability of the value chain of this product.

This is expected to improve the positioning and commercialization of Peruvian coffee in national and international markets.
